Kirigami Triangle Window Decoration

This triangle window decoration requires only a sheet of paper and a pair of scissors. The resulting project can be glued in front of card stock to make a one-of-a-kind greeting card. Alternatively, the decoration can be taped to a window; the sun shines through the layers of paper to make a great design. This project can also be done with a rectangle or a square piece of paper.

Kirigami Triangle Window Decoration Instructions

1. Start with a equilateral triangle (learn how to make one here. Fold the triangle in half (left to right). Unfold and fold again in the other direction (top to bottom-left). Unfold and fold one more time (top to bottom-right).
    
2. You will get a crease pattern as shown.
    
3. Pick up the paper and begin to collapse it along the crease lines made above. When done, the 3 flaps will stack on top of one another.
    
4. Using scissors, make 3 cuts in the folded paper: cut from left to right, parallel to the base of the folded paper.
    
5. Carefully unfold the paper. You will see multiple cuts in the shape of triangles within triangles. Starting from the center of the paper, fold the tips of the cut triangles inwards.
    
6. Leave the second triangle as it is. Fold the tips of the third triangle inwards.
    
7. Shown is a window decoration on black backing (left) and stuck on a backing which allows sun to shine through. Note that parts of the decoration are darker than others due to the multiple layers of paper which the light shines through.
