DIY Paper Spider Web

Strictly speaking, this Spider Web is not origami because it involves a lot of cutting. I would call it a DIY Paper Spider Web. You can also call it a Kirigami Spider web where kiri means “cut” and gami is for “paper”. This model is great for Halloween time because it is easy to make and easy to recognize. If you use large paper, you can make a pretty big spider web!

Paper Spider Web Instructions

Step 1:
Take a regular sheet of paper like 8.5″ x 11″ office paper and fold it in half (bottom to top)

Step 2:
Fold the paper in half (left to right) and make a pinch crease just enough so you can see where the half way mark is located.

Step 3:
Fold the right side of the paper towards the left. Make the fold so it goes through the pinch crease made above. Fold the amount of paper that is about 1/3 of the way across the width of the paper.

Step 4:
Fold the left side of the paper towards the right. If your fold above was not exactly 1/3; this would be the time to adjust the fold. The edges of the paper should line up, indicating that the paper has been folded into thirds.

Step 5:
Use a pair of scissors to cut the paper across the top so the edges are even.

Step 6:
Use a ruler and pencil to draw a central margin and horizontal strips. These will show you where to cut in the next step.

Step 7:
Cut the shaded segments off. Be sure to leave the central margin uncut.

Step 8:
Carefully unravel the paper and you will get a paper spider web.

Variation 1

Step 9:
A variation is to use the edge of a plate to draw curved lines instead of straight lines.

Step 10:
Cut the shaded regions; be sure to not cut the central margin.

Step 11:
Unravel the paper to see a beautiful spider web.

Variation 2

Step 13:
If you cut the tip off the paper, it gives a hole in the center of the spider web.
