Book Sculptures and Altered Books

Book sculptures or Altered Books is an art form where books are modified to create fantastic forms. Modifications may include cutting, tearing, gluing, folding, painting, and the adding-on of other elements. The result is a transformation of a bound stack of papers into an elaborate display.

Book sculptures are often made from old books so as to avoid copyright infringement. As well, converting an old book into art seems more environmentally friendly than buying a new book for transformation.

In this web site, the book sculptures are made by folding only: there are no cuts and glue is not used. Most of the books are misprinted or expired day-planners donated by Slingshot, an all volunteer, non-profit Collective.
